Silent Night

Had a blast recording one of my favorite Christmas Songs….Silent Night.

Some Tech info about the project.
For this project I used Garage Band for all recording….I used my hollow body for most of the jazz comps and solo. However, I switched to my Les Paul copy for the solo at the end. I used an basic electric bass for the low end…just another Fender copy… However, I had to program the drums…Looking forward to getting a drum set ASAP. For vocals…I used the compresser and other effect right out of garage band…

Jimmy Hendrix Little Wing (Cover)

Download

Been in a Hendrix mood lately…Thought I would add yet another cover of his song, Little Wing to the long list of renditions already out there.

I tried to hold to the spirit and style that Hendrix originally added to the song… Only I am afraid I didn’t have a Lesly and a Glockenspiel laying around so I had to improvise.

The solo is more of my own style. However…I hope it captured the freedom, innocence and youth that originally inspired Hendrix to write the song. I may continue to work on the solo in the future as time allows.

Gravity (John Mayer Cover)

Just finished this John Mayor cover….Gravity. I hope that he doesn’t mind me recording a cover of this song. I have been a fan of John’s music for some time and when a friend of mine turned me on to this song some time ago I just had to learn it. It is simple and brilliant tune. Along with “Daughters” and “Waiting on the World to Change,” it is one of my favorite songs to sing and play.

As I under it…Here is John’s intended meaning of the song…

“this is a song about… making sure you still love yourself… making sure you still have your head on, making sure you still say no the way your mom would say no. And I will need it every damn day of my life because it’s easier to mess up than it is to stay here.”

Full Song – Sanity Check

Finally finished a little stock music project that I have been working on. It was a song I wrote several years ago. My friend Mark Herring might remember a late night messing around at Light House Productions recording an early version this thing…good times.

Anyway…I thought I would post it out here for a couple days before I submit it to the Stock Music Site.

This final all guitar version has, what I hope to be viewed as an improved solo over my earlier version. All the drums and guitars are my own tracks. However, I hope to get with my friend Kenny Long soon to lay down a B3 track for yet one more version of the song. Kenny is an amazing musician with all kinds a chops on all kinds of instruments so it should be great.

He Knows My Name

He Knows My Name, Tommy Walker

He Knows My Name is one of my favorite songs by Tommy Walker. I put together a little blues version of the song and I think I finally have a recording that is not too embarrassing. I used my Les Paul copy Guitar, a Fender knockoff for Bass,  and all drums/effects are in Garage Band…a virtual band on a budget.

Remember (Re Mix)

Download

I recently completed mixing down some tracks of a song a wrote for my daughter Abby when she was born. I was not very happy with how the mix turn out. So before I moved on to some new songs I went ahead and re-recording the whole thing. I slowed it down a bit and limited the guitars to acoustic and bass. I don’t know if I will ever be completely pleased with any recording that I do…but I am much happy with this mix than I was with the earlier one.

For the record…I am also posting the lyrics t the song.

Remember

I remember, the day you opened up your eyes
I remember, the brilliant shade of blue
I remember, the first time that I held you close
I remember, that I just fell in love with you.

I remember, the first time that you ran to me
I remember, how you opened up your arms
I remember, the first times that you laughed and cried
…and every little step you take. I just love to look at you

There will be times, when I will tell you things that you don’t want to hear
There will be times, when I won’t hold you back from facing things you fear
When your life gets hard, how I pray that you remember

Cause I remember, who has brought you here to me
and I remember, who has formed your heart
and I’ll remember, to tell you there’s a God who loves you
Cause knowing just how much I love you
Is know where His love is really starts

There will be times, when I will tell you things that you don’t want to hear
There will be times, when I won’t hold you back from facing things you fear
When your life gets hard, how I pray that you remember

…Thank I’ll always love you
…And by that you’ll know our God, loves you more.

I remember, the day you opened up your eyes
I remember, the brilliant shade of blue
I remember, the first time that I held you close
I remember, that I just fell in love with you.

A Conversation With Godfrey (A Song In Memory of Godfrey Viegas)

Play: A Conversation With Godfrey

Dr. Godfrey ViegasNovember 8, 1963 - July 23, 2010

Words have been in short supply lately. Shocking…I know. Let’s just say that God has taught me a great deal over this past year and I am thankful for His great love and peace. One thing that God sparked in my life recently is a renewed love for music. I had almost forgotten how much I love to play. And then God brought Godfrey Viegas into my life.

This is a song I wrote in memory of Dr. Godfrey Viegas, a dear family friend who went to be with Christ almost one year ago on July 23, 2010. Godfrey probably never new how much he inspired me to get back into music. I don’t know that I will ever be able to play guitar as well as this gifted doctor, father, artist and most importantly, follower of Christ…and this is my first attempt at writing and playing jazz guitar, walking bass, etc….But I will forever be thankful for the simple joy that Godfrey helped me rediscover in playing music.

The song is entitled a Conversion with Godfrey after my friend Glenn listened to the song and told me that it reminded him of a conversation between two friends. When I heard him describe the song that way I thought…perfect…For me this song is a reminder of the few times I had the privilege to play with Godfrey and all the conversations I missed…but most of all I hope it captures his energy, joy and passion for music.

Just over one year ago my family and I were just returning to Memphis from visiting the Viegas family. During that visit we had when last chance to capture Godfrey’s talent on video before God took him home just days later. You can check out some of this video and other examples of Godfrey’s work at http://www.youtube.com/godfreyviegas.

Thank You God for Godfrey Viegas…for how You blessed many through him.
